Artist Statement
For me, creating art is a way to process difficult experiences and foster resilience. The act of making art opens up conversations between parts of myself-- those with words and those that speak only through visual and sensory means. My hope is that the finished work, whether more serious or lighthearted in nature, speaks to the viewer in a way that facilitates deeper connection to self and others.
Currently, I’ve been exploring themes such as queer visibility as resilience and resistance in the face of an oppressive regime that seeks to erase queerness at all levels of society. My work celebrates the inherent queerness found in what some describe as “the delightfully weird”.
I work in a variety of mediums, including mixed media collage, digital photography, painting, and even shrink plastic. I continue to challenge conventions that serve to reinforce the status quo with all their “shoulds,” and this is opening up so many more creative possibilities.
